Well-connected energy solutions

Historically, large power plants burned fossil fuels to generate electricity and heat in Germany. However, this landscape is evolving. The future grid will be dominated by wind and solar power, featuring numerous small, decentralized producers.

For this system to function efficiently, all players need to be interconnected and managed intelligently. How is this achieved? Specialists at Forschungszentrum Jülich are testing these solutions at the Living Lab Energy Campus (LLEC), transforming the entire campus into a living laboratory for tomorrow's energy solutions.

LLEC: The Living Lab Blog

“We are experimenting with optimal coordination of technology, energy carriers, and consumption. Our focus is on energy sector coupling, integrating electricity, heat, and chemical energy in the form of hydrogen,” explains project manager Stefan Kasselmann.

Since 2018, Forschungszentrum Jülich has introduced new technologies and upgraded existing ones for the living lab. The LLEC’s core is an advanced software platform with adaptive algorithms managing the campus’s complex energy system, considering variables such as weather, light, and room occupancy.

The result: enhanced sustainability, economic efficiency, and comfort. This concept could serve as a model for future residential and industrial areas!
