Biological Information processing

How cells get rid of their waste: long-sought-after sulphate transporter identified

In order to stay healthy, cells must break down waste products and remove their components. Researchers from Jülich, Hanover and Dresden have identified a protein that plays a key role in this process – a role that had previously remained unclear. Surprisingly, the protein also has a second function.

Hydrogen expert Peter Wasserscheid Receives Archimedes Science Award

For his work in the field of hydrogen technologies, Prof. Peter Wasserscheid was honored on September 9, 2026, by receiving the 2026 Archimedes Science Award. The EUR 50,000 accolade was presented in Dresden under the auspices of TUD Dresden University of Technology by the Free State of Saxony and the DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Alliance.

Quantum Computer

Official Launch of JION at Jülich

Forschungszentrum Jülich and Siegen-based start-up eleQtron have officially inaugurated the quantum computer JION. Developed in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), JION will be made available to research institutions and industry through the JUNIQ user infrastructure, enabling hybrid computations with Jülich’s supercomputers. NRW Minister-President Hendrik Wüst and NRW Science Minister Ina Brandes hailed JION as a technological milestone.

Our 3 strategic research priorities

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy and climate

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.

As a founding member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of the largest German research organization and contribute our top-class expertise to four of the six Helmholtz Research Fields: Energy, Matter, Information, and Earth & Environment.
