How Age and Exhaustion Affect Safety in Crowds

How do people move when space becomes limited? And what influence do age and exhaustion have in this? These questions are being investigated by Jülich researchers in experiments conducted jointly with partners from the German Sport University in Cologne.

Robot dogs in hospital care

Forschungszentrum Jülich explores ethical frameworks for HELIA

How can robots support doctors and nurses in the demanding routines of hospital care? These and similar questions are at the heart of the HELIA (Helping Robots in Everyday Clinical Practice) research project, in which Forschungszentrum Jülich is involved. INM-7 contributes expertise in the field of ethical, legal, and social aspects.

AI tool “Helixer” identifies genes in newly sequenced organisms

Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf have developed a tool that could significantly transform genome research: Helixer identifies genes directly from DNA sequences – without laboratory experiments or prior knowledge about the organism.

Plant Research

New cell map reveals how barley ears develop

How do just a few cells give rise to the complex floral structures of crops such as barley? A research team from the CEPLAS Cluster of Excellence has now answered this question. The researchers presented the first detailed cell map of barley ear development. Scientists from the IBG-4 at Forschungszentrum Jülich contributed to the project.

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.

As a founding member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of the largest German research organization and contribute our top-class expertise to four of the six Helmholtz Research Fields: Energy, Matter, Information, and Earth & Environment.
