The plan to phase out lignite poses major challenges to the Rhineland region. The first of the local power plant blocks are scheduled to go offline by 2022.

The region is experiencing a radical structural change – and Forschungszentrum Jülich is helping to find answers to some pressing questions. Scientific innovations will help to create new value chains in the three future fields of information, energy, and bioeconomy. This will keep valuable jobs in the region, while new business ideas find their feet and create new jobs. We will demonstrate how this can be done in this year’s end-of-year lecture, which is going to be broadcasted online for the first time.
Its focus is on the structural change in the Rhineland region. The event, titled “New Thinking, New Opportunities: How Research Can Contribute to Structural Change.”, will see Forschungszentrum Jülich present some of its scientists and their exciting projects working towards making the Rhineland an innovative region and model for others. They show how a region can proceed in the face of upheavals, so that people still enjoy living and working there into the future.

You are all warmly invited to the first-ever digital broadcast of this event.*
An English translation of the lecture will be available.

*(The end-of-year lecture evening will be recorded shortly in advance of the broadcast.)
