Helmholtz Doctoral Awards

Two female scientists honoured in Berlin

This year’s Helmholtz Doctoral Awards were presented on 7 July at the Helmholtz Association’s headquarters in Berlin. Among the eleven winners were two early-career researchers with links to Forschungszentrum Jülich: Monica Keszler, then a doctoral researcher at IMD-2, and Dr. Laura Helleckes, a former doctoral researcher at IBG-1, were honoured for their outstanding dissertations.

Glutamate transporters

What glutamate transporters can reveal about rare epilepsies

Why do some children with a particular genetic defect develop severe epileptic symptoms, while others with the same affected gene experience much milder forms of the condition? An international study involving the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Forschungszentrum Jülich has provided new answers and opened the door to novel treatment strategies for severe early-onset epilepsy.

Atmospheric research

The impact of climate agreements on air quality – a comparison of three US scenarios

The Paris Climate Agreement not only protects the Earth's climate but can also significantly improve air quality. This is demonstrated by Dr. Simon Rosanka from the Jülich Institute of Climate and Energy Systems and co-author Professor Ann Marie Carlton from the University of California, Irvine, USA, in a commentary in the Nature Partner Journal Clean Air.

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.
