Brief description of the programme

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports early career scientists (up to 4 years after their PhD) in starting their own research group working on socio-ecological approaches for sustainable and resilient urban-rural regions.

Scientists can be funded for up to 5 years, the funding budget is project specific.

The aim of the funding guideline is to qualify young researchers in the field of society-related sustainability research and the management of inter- and transdisciplinary research groups on the topic of urban-rural regions. The focus is on socio-ecological research approaches and the research topic to be addressed by the respective young investigator group must fundamentally deal with how German cities can be made more sustainable and resilient to crises. Where possible, these solutions should be tested on site and their (potential) impact on sustainability and resilience assessed. An inter- and transdisciplinary researchapproach should be chosen that combines ecological, economic, social and technical aspects in a problem-related perspective.

All information is provided in German, but international applicants can submit their project proposal in English. When considering an application, please contact Mr. Pokraka to discuss a possible prior consultation with the board.

Note: The dates of ongoing calls will not match the call dates (next call, deadline) when you save them to your calendar.
