Wolfgang Marquardt to Become New Chairman of the Board of Forschungszentrum Jülich

Jülich, 10.1.2014. The Supervisory Board of Forschungszentrum Jülich today resolved to appoint Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Marquardt – currently Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities – new Chairman of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich. This is a decisive step towards filling the position of Chairman of the Board.

Wolfgang Marquardt was born in 1956 in Böblingen and has been professor of process systems engineering at RWTH Aachen University since 1993. In 2001, Marquardt was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for his research.

He has been a member of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) since 2010 and chairman since February 2011. Marquardt is married and has one daughter.

Before being appointed by the Supervisory Board, Marquardt introduced himself to Jülich's Scientific and Technical Council, composed of the heads of institute as well as elected representatives of the scientific and technical staff. Contractual negotiations are currently still in progress and after their conclusion the Federal Government will be informed of Marquardt's appointment. It is envisaged that he will take up his new position in summer 2014. The current chairman of the board, Prof. Achim Bachem, is to retire on 30 June 2014.
