Our AI Consulting Team explores new applications of AI in science. We team up with researchers from all scientific disciplines and jointly develop innovative AI-driven approaches to advance their fields. At the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), we operate one of the most powerful supercomputer infrastructures for scientific and engineering applications in Europe. Within our lab “Applied Machine Learning”, we drive the development of cutting-edge ML applications for science. We identify exciting datasets, develop interesting research questions, train powerful models, and continuously push the boundaries of what AI can achieve.

Your Job:

In this position, you will be an active part of our AI Consulting Team. Together with our partners, we develop new and innovative applications of Machine Learning. You will connect to scientists and investigate possible applications of ML in fields like Chemistry, Numerics, Computational Biology, Astrophysics, Heliophysics etc.. You will be involved in all phases of this process. You will

  • Identify new applications for Machine Learning in science, engineering, and technology
  • Develop, implement and refine ML techniques
  • Implement parallel ML training on the High Performance Computers
  • Engage in national and international ML/DL communities, most importantly in helmholtz.ai, the Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit: https://www.helmholtz.ai/
  • Present research results at scientific meetings, conferences, and as scientific papers
  • Contribute to educational events, such as courses and hackathons

Your Profile:

  • Excellent Master or preferably subsequent PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or similar fields
  • Broad interest in scientific topics
  • Good knowledge of AI and applied Machine Learning
  • Practical experience with High Performance Computing Systems as well as parallel/distributed programming and/or solid UNIX skills
  • Practical experience with ML/DL workflows and common software libraries
  • Your experience should be documented in research papers and Open Source code projects
  • Self-motivated personality with a curiosity for working in a multidisciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems
  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English

The position is initially for a fixed term of 2 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund), pay group 13, depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to them.
