Excellence Prize for Dr. Rebekka Tesch for the Optimization of Batteries

As part of her doctoral degree, the chemist has further developed computing methods that contribute to making materials for batteries and fuel cells more efficient and durable, which is important for the progress of the energy transition. From 2020 to 2023, Dr. Tesch was a doctoral researcher at Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Theory and Computation of Energy Materials.

Exascale computer

First containers for JUPITER set up at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre

Jülich will be the location of the first European supercomputer of the exascale class. The first containers of the modular computer centre in which JUPITER will be located have now been delivered. The exascale computer is expected to perform a quintillion floating-point operations per second, opening up new possibilities in the field of artificial intelligence.

Neuroscience

Evolutionarily Youngest Brain Regions Age First

A research team from Forschungszentrum Jülich and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf has discovered that the regions of the human brain that have expanded most recently in the course of evolution show the strongest aging effects. This is evident from comparisons with brain ageing in our closest relatives, the chimpanzees. The findings of this study have now been published in the journal Science Advances.

The scientific objective of energy research is an energy system based on renewable energy which will help make the transformation of the German energy sector a success as well as limiting climate change.

Bioeconomy

As the global population increases, agricultural land recedes, and fossil fuel resources are on the decline, there is a need to transition from an oil-based economy to one based on the sustainable use of renewable resources. It is in this respect that the bioeconomy can make some key contributions.

As a founding member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of the largest German research organization and contribute our top-class expertise to four of the six Helmholtz research fields: energy, matter, information, and Earth and environment.
