Cold as Ice

Jülich/Garching, 10 July 2014 – Ferrous proteins from the family of haem enzymes, such as haemoglobin, play a vital role in our body. Cytochrome c peroxidase, a detoxifying enzyme, degrades hydrogen peroxide. An international team of researchers has now decoded an important intermediate stage in this process, referred to as Compound 1, using the neutron measuring instrument BIODIFF of Technische Universität München and Forschungszentrum Jülich. Their findings have been published in the journal Science.
