European and Jülich Researchers Break Fusion Energy Record

Jülich/Oxford, 9 February 2022 – Researchers in the EUROfusion consortium have succeeded in generating the highest energy pulse ever achieved. In the record-breaking experiment, the fusion reactions in the Joint European Torus (JET) facility released a total of 59 megajoules of heat energy during a five-second plasma pulse. The results, which were announced by the scientists during a press conference today, provide the clearest evidence yet of the potential of fusion energy to deliver safe, sustainable, and low-carbon energy. A number of Jülich researchers and engineers contribute their scientific expertise to JET.
