Higher Energy Densities for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jülich/Münster, 21 December 2021 – Alternative battery systems, such as sodium and lithium solid-state batteries, are often discussed in the media as promising in terms of high energy densities. Researchers from Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS), a branch office of Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the MEET Battery Research Center in Münster explain in a new publication that the potential of conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has not yet been fully exploited. Electrochemical experiments have revealed that energy densities can be increased further through the improved control of cascading failures. The study has been published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
