Grassland temperature sum

Grassland temperature sums from the weather station at the research centre Jülich

The following table contains the cumulative corrected grassland temperature sums (GTS) from the weather station at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The grassland temperature sum is used in agricultural meteorology to determine the sustainable start of vegetation in spring. Once a temperature sum of 200 is reached, fertiliser can be utilised by plants.

To calculate the GTS, all positive mean daily temperatures measured from the beginning of the year are summarised and corrected depending on the month. This value is multiplied by a factor of 0.5 in January and 0.75 in February. From March onwards, the full daily average (factor = 1.0) is used in the calculation. Continuous temperature measurements at 2 metres above the ground were used to determine the mean daily temperatures used in the calculation. Negative daily mean temperatures are excluded from the totals.

From 1 January of each year until a GTS of 200 is reached, the updated sum will also be published here several times a week.
