Terms of Reference

JCNS offers access to free beam time for scientific use at its instruments – please note that you agree to our Terms of Reference when submitting a proposal!

This means

  • you have to submit an experimental report not later than two months after the experiment had been conducted,
  • you have to publish your results in a peer-reviewed publication and inform us about it,
  • you have to give the proper acknowledgements.

Experimental reports

No later than two months after the end of the experiment, all users are required to submit an experiment report to show data collected during the experiment session, together with an initial interpretation where possible. Please bear in mind that failure to submit your experimental report may lead to the rejection of future proposals!

Twelve months after the end of the experiment, this report will be available online.

Please note: The JCNS User Office has no access to the ILL- or SNS-Database, therefore we need a copy of your Experimental Report. Thank you!

Publications and acknowledgements

We help you to solve your scientific problems, to get the data you need to answer your scientific questions free of charge – and you publish your results in a peer-reviewed publication. Because your publication is our currency, all users are obliged to notify their local contacts about any publication of the results achieved at a JCNS instrument.

Please don’t forget the following acknowledgements!

Acknowledge the scientist

Please bear in mind that without the help of the scientists, in providing access to the instrument and assistance and support during measurement time, the experiments would not be possible!

Therefore, we expect that the JCNS scientist in charge of the proposal is involved as co-author in publications mainly dealing with the results of the experiment.

Acknowledge the instrument

Proper mention shall also be made of the instrument and the operating institution, preferably on the first page of the any publication resulting from experiments conducted on any JCNS instrument.

Alternatively, the following acknowledgement statement is required at the end of the publication:

This work is based upon experiments performed at the (instrument name) instrument operated by JCNS at the XXX.

where XXX is one of the three JCNS outstations:

  • Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ), Garching, Germany
  • Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble, France
  • Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge, USA

Acknowledge financial support

If financial support from JCNS was granted to the experimental team, this should also be acknowledged in any publication.
For the acknowledgement, please use the following text:

The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by JCNS to perform the neutron scattering measurements at the XXX.

where XXX is one of the three JCNS outstations:

  • Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ), Garching, Germany
  • Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble, France
  • Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge, USA
