Prof. em. Dr. Hermann Sahm

Former Head of Institute of Biotechnology 1

Hermann Sahm was Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Düsseldorf and Chairman of the Institute of Biotechnology 1 at the Research Center (FZ) Jülich from 1977 to 2007. Born in Künzelsau, Germany, in 1942, he completed his undergraduate studies in microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Göttingen and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mirobiology from the University of Tübingen. From 1970 to 1977 Dr. Sahm worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he did research in the physiology of methanol-utilizing bacteria and yeasts.

Professor Sahm served as Chairman of the Dechema group Environmental Biotechnology from 1980 to 1991, and was awarded the Dechema Max-Buchner Research Foundation Prize in 1986. He was President of the German Society for General and Applied Microbiology from 1989 to 1991, and he is a member of the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Düsseldorf since 1990.

Professor Sahm's special research interest was Applied Microbiology including construction of bacterial strains for the production of amino acids, organic acids, and alcohol (metabolic engineering).
