Electronic Properties

At the PGI "Electronic Properties" Institute, we explore the interrelations between electronic structure and physical properties such as magnetism and magnetic phenomena by applying, for example, synchrotron radiation techniques. Systems of interest range from thin film systems, quantum wires and dots to molecules. Keywords here are nanosciences, spintronics, quantum computing, and giant magnetoresistance.

JuSPARC Launch: New High-Power Lasers Go into Operation at Jülich

Jülich, 25 January 2019 – A new laser laboratory was officially opened at FZ Jülich on Thursday. At the heart of JuSPARC are its two high-performance lasers, which generate ultrashort laser pulses of up to 1.4 terawatts, or 1.4 trillion watts.

To take advantage of the electron spin in future electronics, spin angular momentum needs to be transported and detected. Electric fields and temperature gradients have been shown to efficiently drive spin transport at megahertz and gigahertz frequencies. However, to probe the initial elementary steps that lead to the formation of spin currents, we need to launch and measure transport on much faster, that is, on femtosecond time scales.
