Plant Screen Mobile: A mobile device app for plant trait analysis

Leaf area is one of the fundamental variables to quantify plant growth and physiological function and is therefore widely used to characterize genotypes and their interaction with the environment. With the development of Plant Screen Mobile (PSM) we provide a suitable smartphone solution for estimating proxies of leaf area and biomass in various imaging scenarios in the lab, greenhouse and in the field. This requires image segmentation of plant parts and background. Therefore the core of the application comprises different classification approaches. Beyond the estimation of projected leaf area the app can also be used to quantify color and shape parameters as well as to estimate the number of objects in an image (e.g. suitable for seed counting). PSM has been published in the software section of Plant Methods https://doi.org/10.1186/s13007-019-0386-z. The datasets generated and/or analyzed during the current study are available in the e!DAL research data publication system, http://dx.doi.org/10.25622/FZJ/2018/1

PSM runs on Android-based smartphones with Android Version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher. The source code of PlantScreenMobile is hosted at [link: GitHub] and licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL-3.0). The app requires the OpenCV manager. In case the automatic download fails or does not work, please install the manager from https://opencv-manager.de.aptoide.com/ (alternative download from: https://apkpure.com/de/opencv-manager/org.opencv.engine). In rare cases, where all other options fail, the OpenCV Manager can be installed from the OpenCV for Android SDK, which can be downloaded from https://sourceforge.net/projects/opencvlibrary/files/opencv-android/ .Under the subfolder 'apk' several versions are listed. Please choose  the one, which fits to the chipset of your smartphone.
