Sleepless in Seattle - From Space Age to the Quantum Age at IEEE Quantum Week 2023

Our enriching experience at IEEE Quantum Week 2023 in Bellevue, Washington has come to an end. Colleague Dennis Nielinger delivered a compelling invited talk on Cryogenic Electronics for Quantum Systems, drawing significant interest from industry partners and culminating in a dynamic and fruitful discussion. Engaging with peers from Fermilab, Microsoft, IBM, Google, and Intel, we explored our cryo-electronics approach for qubit control and gained valuable insights into their solutions and research related to operating CMOS at 4 Kelvin.

In the exhibits and poster sessions Mario Schlösser highlighted our participation in the QSolid project, where we are developing an innovative room-temperature control system for superconducting quantum bits. In addition to acknowledging the existing commercial solutions offered by Zurich Instruments, Quantum Machines, and QBlox, we also explored potential collaboration prospects with various research groups as:

  • University of California at Berkeley, Gang Huang et al. with their open source and off-the-shelf full stack qubit control system – QubiC 2.0
  • Fermilab by Gustavo Cancelo and partners from University of Washington, the Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit solution – QICK

To top it off, Stefan van Waasen was spontaneously interviewed about his motivation and opinion of the IEEE conference to promote the upcoming Quantum Week 2024 in Toronto, Canada.

During that exciting week, we had the chance to visit Seattle's famous spots such as Pike Place Market, enjoyed the stunning views from the Space Needle, and took a ride on the historic Monorail from the 1962 Century 21 Exposition.

The IEEE Quantum Week emerges as a dynamic forum at the intersection of quantum computing and engineering, offering a distinctive platform for engaging in dialogues on the various facets of this evolving field. This event brought together quantum scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, developers, students, educators, programmers, and newcomers, fostering discussions on the challenges and prospects within the quantum realm.
