The magnetic properties of two-dimensional rare-earth/noble-metal compounds: a theoretician's perspective

The members of the family of two-dimensional compounds REAu_2, where RE is a lanthanide, are promising substrates for the realization of hybrid metal-organic "spinterfaces". Over the last years we have found some common trends in the electronic and magnetic properties of these surfaces, but we have also observed strongly varying behaviours when the RE species is changed. In this talk I will review our main findings. Structurally, the REAu2 two-dimensional compounds show a smooth moiré pattern with a very low defect concentration. Their electronic structure is determined by the valency of the RE atom and by the RE(d)-Au(s) bands, which show similar dispersions for all the lanthanide series. The magnetic anisotropy of REAu_2 is, as a first approximation, a consequence of the 4f orbital configuration (multiplet). Nevertheless, from an analysis of the zero-orbital moment compounds (RE=Gd and Eu), we learn that the RE(d)-Au(s) bands have a relevant role in the observed anisotropy, too. Finally, I will show how electronic and magnetic properties are modified when these surfaces are used as templates for physisorbed Cu phthalocyanine molecules.
