The JARA Institute "Brain structure function relationships: Decoding the human brain at systemic levels" (JARA-BRAIN Institute [JBI] 1) is a joint institute of RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich within the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA). On the Jülich side, it is a division of the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, and on the Aachen side, it is an institute of the Medical Faculty without tasks in patient care. The aim of the institute is translational brain research, especially with the method of computational neuroscience. In particular, it is intended to develop a consistent, cross-scale model of brain function and dysfunction from the level of the individual neuron to the whole brain. To this end, unified protocols will be developed at all scales. The goal is to better understand function and dysfunction in mentally ill patients and to derive and test biologically valid models of neuropsychiatric diseases in the institute and to offer these in perspective as a starting point for diagnostic measures as well as therapeutic innovations.

The JARA-BRAIN Institute (JBI) 1 is managed in Aachen and at Forschungszentrum Jülich by the same board of directors, which currently consists of the JARA professors:

Executive Director

Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. soc. Ute Habel

Deputy Executive Director

Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Markus Diesmann

Director

Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sonja Grün

General Manager

Dr. rer. medic. Volker Backes

Workgroups

JBI 1 / INM 10 has two working groups in addition to the directors' working groups:

Function of cortical circuits

Head: Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dirk Feldmeyer

Optophysiology

Head: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Björn Kampa

Until 2022 the INM 10 also had the following working group

Structure of functional cortical units

Head: Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Joachim Lübke, retired
