Institute of Energy Technologies (IET)

The Institute of Energy Technologies (IET) develops and investigates technologies for the conversion and storage of renewable electricity. Due to the increasing expansion of photovoltaics and wind power, the efficient and cost-effective conversion and storage of electrical energy, as well as its use in industry, commerce, and mobile applications, plays a key role in the energy transition. The aim is to compensate for regional and temporal fluctuations in the supply of electrical energy and to ensure that all relevant energy sectors are either CO₂-neutral or, in some cases, CO₂-negative.

Fundamental Electrochemistry (IET-1)

At the IET-1, we develop new key technologies in the areas of electrochemical energy storage and conversion in order to advance the energy transition and the structural change in the Rhineland area.

Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (IET-2 / HI ERN)

The Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN) investigates and develops material- and process-based solutions for a climate-neutral, sustainable, and cost-effective utilization of renewable energies.

Theory and Computation of Energy Materials (IET-3)

One of the biggest challenges for the global community is the transition of the current energy system towards sustainable and highly efficient technologies for energy conversion and storage, like fuel cells, electrolysis cells (for water splitting and CO2 reduction), and batteries.

Electrochemical Process Engineering (IET-4)

The transition to a sustainable energy system requires the use of new, efficient technologies for the conversion of greenhouse gas-free secondary energy sources obtained from renewable energies.
