About us

The Institute of Energy and Climate Research, Fundamental Electrochemistry (IEK-9) was established in 2011 with a modest number of 10 members. Since then, the institute has not only grown fast in numbers, but also in complexity and diversity. Our research focuses on the contemporary issues of energy storage and conversion in order to facilitate the ultimate transformation of society and economy to renewables.

The challenging complexity of the „Energiewende“ and the „Strukturwandel“ is met by the diversity of our institute. Today, more than 180 people from 20 different countries around the world work at the IEK-9. Together with the other IEKs and RWTH Aachen, as well as other academic institutes and strong partners from industry, we tirelessly tackle the challenge of developing a sustainable energy cycle for the society of the future.
