Validation and Verification of Simulations

Validation and verification are conducted for assessing whether a given method or model is appropriate for given applications.

When applying and testing simulations of pedestrian movement, it must be ensured and documented that the calculation methods used for the application under consideration provide sufficiently accurate predictions about the course and consequences of the scenarios considered.

From the perspective of the intended uses we check by validation to ensure that the simulation represent processes of real life. For this purpose data of laboratory large-scale pedestrian experiments are used, that are collected by the Empiricism working group.

For verification purposes we check in a continuous process whether the implementation of the calculation methods corresponds to the developer's conceptual description. Test cases are created for the models and functions and implemented in our continuous test environment (see Software Engineering).

Simulation shows a high density in the middle. In the experiments other hotspots occured which underlines the need of improving the models.
