Integrative modelling of early visual system

A major challenge in systems neuroscience is the integration of the fragmented experimental knowledge into a coherent and comprehensive understanding of the brain function. Large-scale biologically detailed models of the brain can serve as the framework within which such information integration can be undertaken. In this talk I will introduce our long-term computational modelling program that seeks to gradually build up a comprehensive model of primary visual cortex (V1). I will present our core V1 model, and the broad range of experimental findings it captures. I will then show how the same model can reconcile seemingly contradictory results on how excitation and inhibition interact in response to static vs. drifting oriented visual stimuli. Next I will show how we apply the framework to the modelling of optogenetic stimulation of V1 for the purpose of neural-prosthetic vision restoration. I will close the talk with a brief overview of our current efforts to address even broader range of phenomena in our V1 modelling framework.
