Terrestrial sensing across scales

Skalenübergreifende Messungen in terrestrischen Systemen

Terrestrial systems are inherently heterogeneous at all scales. The spatial arrangement of small-scale structures may signTerrestrial sensing across scalesificantly affect the processes and functioning of these systems at larger scales. To disentangle the complex non-linear interactions of gas, water and solute exchanges across different spatial and temporal scales, we develop novel sensing tools and methods. The following methods represent our core expertise (in alphabetical order):

  • Active and passive microwave remote sensing
  • Cosmic-ray neutron soil moisture probes
  • Electrical impedance and resistivity tomography
  • Electromagnetic induction
  • Ground penetrating radar
  • Lysimetry
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • Surface-atmosphere flux measurements
  • Wireless sensor networks
