What we do?

At IKP-4 scientist and engineers are working on all questions concerning the acceleration and storage of charged particles. This includes the accleration in high frequency cavities, precise control over flight trajectories in magnetic fields as well as beam cooling and diagnostics. The staff at IKP-4 ensures that all nuclear physics experiments at Forschungszentrum Jülich are effeiciently run and produce optimal results. In addition to operating the COoler SYnchrotron COSY in Jülich we are also active in developing new particle accelerator technology. Since 2012 the IKP-4 plans and builds the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR) at the international accelerator center FAIR (Faciltiy for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt. Once operational the HESR is supposed to store and provide antiprotons and heavy ions.

PANDA Target meets HESR Stochastic Cooling System in COSY
Jülich, September 2018. The High Energy Storage Ring (HESR) is the core storage ring for experiments with antiprotons and heavy ions at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany, on the campus of GSI. FAIR contracted FZJ for design, procurement and commissioning of the HESR (without buildings). The Institute for Nuclear Physics 4 (IKP-4) is coordinating the project, is responsible and carries out most of the work. Next largest support within FZJ is supplies by ZEA-1, which is responsible for the complete vacuum work package.
