A further major activity in IEK-9 is the development of high-temperature fuel cells and electrolysers. The knowledge of the kinetics and mechanisms gained by investigation of the electrode processes is used for the development of novel electrolyte and electrode materials, which should make operation of the SOFC at temperatures below 600 °C with sufficient performance characteristics feasible.

Moreover, the optimization of longevity, that is the acquisition of knowledge on the degradation processes in the materials and at the interfaces is a major task the IEK-9 has set to herself.
