Helmholtz Nano Facility (HNF)

The Helmholtz Nano Facility (HNF) at Forschungszentrum Jülich is a central technology platform for the production of structures and devices for the key areas of "Green Microchips / Computing", Quantum Computing and Neuromorphic Computing, Bioelectronics and Microfluidics. It provides technologies and equipment for the research, production and characterization of nano and micrometer structures of high strategic importance to the key technologies research area and JARA.

As a user facility, the HNF provides broad access to these technologies for universities, research institutions, industry and the direct transfer of knowledge to society.

Scientific background

A paradigm change is imminent in information technology, which is driven by the requirements for new functionalities and increasingly higher-performance and more energy-efficient components. Therefore, the future lies in cross-system and radical alternative approaches for information processing and data transport. The Research Centre will meet this challenge with the construction of a nanoelectronic platform for bio-inspired architectures, quantum information, non-volatile memory and CMOS switches at its physical

Prospective benefits

Secure and environmentally-compatible use of energy represents one of the main challenges for modern society. Information technology must also face this challenge. The extreme hunger for energy of integrated circuits and applications is growing rapidly and currently lies at around ten percent of total electricity consumption for the Federal Republic of Germany, with a rising trend. The resource-conserving use of energy through increasing effi ciency plays a key role in this, so that "green microchips" and "green computing" are the challenges for society that need to be solved
