Placement semesters

required by university course regulations

Some university courses require a work placement semester as an integral part of their programme.


The duration of the placement is governed by course regulations.

Expense allowance

As a student on placement, you will be employed as a student assistant for the purpose of a placement semester. Remuneration depends on whether you already have a degree and on weekly working hours.


Placement semesters are possible in all areas of Forschungszentrum Jülich: in the scientific institutes as well as the technical and administrative infrastructure. If you are interested in a placement semester at Jülich, we look forward to receiving your application. You can apply for vacant positions or send a speculative application to suitable institutes and infrastructure divisions. Your application for a placement semester should include the following documents:

  • Cover letter including specific information on the preferred time period for the placement and any alternative periods
  • CV (also stating any voluntary work or memberships in clubs, societies, or associations
  • School leaving certificate
  • Any references or letters of recommendation from previous employment or placements
  • Bachelor’s certificate (if applicable)
  • Current transcript of studies
  • Certificate of enrolment and proof of university placement semester requirement

Timing your application

Finding a suitable position for a placement semester will generally take some time. Since placements at Forschungszentrum Jülich are also in great demand, we recommend that you apply in good time, at least three months, preferably six months, before you intend to begin your placement semester.
