Information about apprenticeship as Materials Tester (F/M/D) specializing in: Metal Technology

Materials testers are experts in the relationship between the internal structure and the material properties of a material. They work in material development and quality control.

EXPERTS WHO RECOGNIZE INNER VALUES

The hardness, tensile strength and stability of a workpiece depends on its internal properties: the composition and crystal structure determine whether the material can meet the requirements. Materials testers are the experts who understand these relationships. They take professional material samples and test for compressive, tensile and flexural strength. And they know how to take a look inside an object without destroying it: by using ultrasound and X-rays. They master optical methods from light to electron microscopy as well as macro and micro photography. Using chemical or physical etching methods, these specialists find out which components an object consists of and how they are put together. Their knowledge is in requested for the development of new materials, but also for the monitoring of industrial production. And in the event of complaints, materials testing is the decisive factor: was a material defect the cause or improper handling? This calls for precision and a little detective work.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO?

The prerequisite is a high school diploma. An interest in technical-physical relationships and mathematical skills are particularly important. Numerous measurements require a lot of patience, and good eyesight is also important in this profession. English skills are required for reading technical literature.

TRAINING WITH A FUTURE

The training lasts three and a half years. Trainees attend vocational school once or twice a week at the vocational college in Cologne. A wide range of practical training is offered at the research centre. At the beginning there is basic training in metal technology. The trainees then learn the activities of a materials tester in various laboratories and workshops at ZEA-1 at ‘’Forschungszentrum Jülich’’. The final examination is taken at the Aachen Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). The final examination consists of two parts. Part I of the final examination takes place before the end of the 2nd year of training and counts for 30%. Part II of the final examination follows at the end of the apprenticeship. The training is not company-specific. Those who learn the profession of materials tester at ‘’Forschungszentrum Jülich’’ can later find employment in industry. Further training helps to deepen the knowledge acquired during training and to keep up with the times. If you want to gain further qualifications, you can become a technician or master craftsman. If the school requirements are met, an engineering course at a university of applied sciences can also follow the apprenticeship.
