Open Access Publication of the Month – Stephanie Wolf (IEK-9), Franziska Winterhalder (IEK-1) et al.

9 October 2023

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the open access publication of the month for October 2023, Stephanie E. Wolf (IEK-9), Franziska E. Winterhalder (IEK-1), Vaibhav Vibhu (IEK-9), L. G. J. (Bert) de Haart (IEK-9), Olivier Guillon (IEK-1), Rüdiger-A. Eichel (IEK-9), and Norbert H. Menzler (IEK-1) describe in detail the current technological status of hydrogen production by high-temperature electrolysis in research and industry. The focus is on energy conversion materials and their long-term stability.

Solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) has proven to be a highly efficient key technology for producing valuable chemicals and fuels from renewably generated electricity at temperatures between 600 °C and 900 °C. This in turn provides a carbon-neutral method for energy storage. The experts at Forschungszentrum Jülich have around thirty years of experience in designing materials for up to 100,000 hours of long-term cell-stack operation. Nevertheless, the successful industrial implementation of SOE requires the development of highly stable ceramic materials with key performance parameters, such as mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability, as well as an application-oriented assessment (cost-effectiveness, simple manufacturing).

In their paper, the authors review state-of-the-art stack components and the materials currently used in industry as well as future challenges regarding material design and stability. In addition to the research progress at Forschungszentrum Jülich, recent international advances in SOEC material engineering are evaluated in terms of performance, stability, and potential for industrial implementation.

The open access publication entitled "Solid oxide electrolysis cells – current material development and industrial application" was published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A.
