Open Access Publication of the Month – Aline Seger and Dr. Michael Sommerauer (INM-3) et al.

7 December 2023

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the open access publication of the month, Aline Seger and Dr. Michael Sommerauer (Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-3) and Department of Neurology at University Hospital Cologne) write about clinical subtypes in individuals with isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD).

Isolated RBD occurs multiple years before Parkinson’s disease (PD) or dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), a very specific marker of their prodromal stage. Although individuals with isolated RBD do not express the full deterioration as patients with PD and DLB, they show a broad variety of multiple milder non-motor symptoms.

Using deep clinical phenotypization and cluster analysis, they were able to dissect two subtypes aligning well with a later conversion to a motor or dementia phenotype. Such a comprehensive characterization of isolated RBD may improve our understanding of varying disease development, helping to predict distinct disease courses and stratification for future clinical trials.

The open access publication entitled entitled “Clinical subtypes in patients with isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder” was published in the journal npj Parkinson’s Disease.
