Translation – Theory and Practice

Students from Cologne University of Applied Sciences visit Language Services

Visitors from FH Köln

On 6 June, the Central Library welcomed students from the Institute of Translation and Multilingual Communication at Cologne University of Applied Sciences (FH Köln). The 13 students from the MA course on specialized translation and one PhD student were eager to learn about practical translation work at the Language Services.

The programme kicked off with a presentation and discussion of work at the Language Services followed by a visit to Materials Synthesis and Processing (IEK-1) at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research where the students discussed issues of science translation and were given a tour of ongoing experiments. The visit was rounded off by a short bus trip around campus.

The Language Services has enjoyed contacts with the Institute of Translation and Multilingual Communication for a number of years. This spring a colleague from the Language Services gave a very well-received seminar on editing and revising English scientific texts in Cologne and has been invited to hold a workshop on the topic in autumn. The exchange between theory and practice has proven fruitful for both sides.
