As the predecessors, the 5th workshop in this series is intended to bring together researchers from the areas of fusion energy and materials science to review advances, both experimental and in the modelling, in study and understanding of processes relevant to plasma-material interaction in fusion devices.

The workshop aims to provide a bridge between fundamental and multi-scale computations and interpretation of experimental data. A variety of processes to be addressed spans a wide range of scales and includes material erosion, transport and trapping of hydrogen and helium in fusion relevant materials, as well as changes in the material microstructure, composition and morphology.

The workshop will cover topics related to advances in computational and experimental studies of PMI processes and evolution of microstructural materials in fusion devices, with a focus on hydrogen transport and trapping in candidate fusion reactor materials, as well as on helium and neutron irradiation related changes of material properties.
Specific topics are detailed in the following:

  • Direct use of first-principles quantum-mechanical codes (DFT and beyond) to study irradiated microstructures and trapping/transport of hydrogen and helium in fusion reactor materials
  • Optimization of parameters in semi-empirical codes from electronic structure calculations in the form of interaction potentials and transition rates for classical models
  • Molecular Dynamics, Kinetic Monte-Carlo, Rate equation studies of PMI, radiation damage processes and morphology evolution
  • Integrated, accelerated approaches and multi-scale simulations involving neutron-induced nuclear reactions, transmutation and thermo-mechanical properties under prolonged operation times in reactor materials
  • Uncertainty quantification of theoretical and experimental PMI data
  • Implantation of energetic particles, physical and chemical sputtering of materials in plasma
  • Changes in surface compositions, morphology and material microstructure due to plasma –material interaction and neutron irradiation
  • Experimental approaches and setups including thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), permeation experiments, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and other microscopies like STM and AFM

Format of the meeting

The workshop will be held as a 3 day online event via Zoom with invited oral presentations on 8-10 June 2021. To facilitate the participation from different time zones, the online time will be limited to a shorter time window, tentatively 14:00-17:30 CEST.
