A Comprehensive Look at Non-equilibrium Dynamics in the Solid State through Complementary Pump-Probe Experiments

Thermodynamics provides excellent means to describe condensed matter in thermal equilibrium because the temperature determines the population of excited states and the resulting overall energy minimization leads to, e. g., structural transitions, magnetic order, or superconductivity.

However, identification of the responsible microscopic interactions is far from trivial due to cooperation or competition of various interactions. Experiments in the time domain provide additional insights in this regard because they access the characteristic time scales of such interactions and femtosecond laser based pump-probe experiments address these time scales.

This approach has proven to be particularly useful if pump-probe techniques which are sensitive to electronic excitations, like angle-resolved photoemission or soft x-ray spectroscopy, are combined with elastic electron diffraction to provide insight into dynamics of the ion cores. In this talk recent results for heterostructures [Fe/MgO]n, see figure below, strongly correlated materials [1,2,3], and magnetization dynamics driven by ultrashort spin currents in Fe/Au/Fe [4,5] will be discussed.
