Ausschreibender Bereich: IEK-10 - Modellierung von Energiesystemen
Kennziffer: 2020D-041

test

The Institute of Energy and Climate Research Energy Systems Engineering (IEK-10) focuses on the development of models and algorithms for simulation and optimization of decentralized, integrated energy systems. Such systems are characterized by high spatial and temporal variability of energy supply and demand as well as by a high degree of interdependence of material and energy flows. Research at IEK-10 aims to provide scalable and faster than real-time capable methods and tools which enable the energy-optimal, cost-efficient and safe design and operation of future energy systems.

We are looking to recruit a

PhD-Position - Conception, Design and Development of an Electricity and Gas Grid Simulation Environment for System Analysis using an HPC Infrastructure

Ihre Aufgaben:

  • Analysis of the current state of the art in quasi dynamic and dynamic simulation of power and gas grids
  • Development and programming of a simulation environment that is able to capture the interaction between different energy grids faster than real-time using HPC infrastructures
  • Development of integrated software tools for automated data analysis, which facilitate sorting and structuring for the user and provide a supportive approach for research by means of integrated administration, interpretation and evaluation mechanisms
  • Development and implementation of a data basis and models for the energy infrastructures on the campus Forschungszentrum Jülich
  • Validation of the implemented simulation models

Ihr Profil:

  • M. Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Engineering Science or a related field field with good final grade (German system equivalent 2.0 or better)
  • Strong mathematical background
  • Interest on energy systems and energy infrastructures, especially regarding power and gas grids
  • Knowledge of modelling, preferably of energy systems, preferably in Modelica
  • Very good knowledge in programming with e.g. C or C++
  • Basic knowledge of parallel processing on shared, distributed memory, and heterogeneous architectures
  • Experience with parallel programming paradigms e.g. OpenMP, OpenCL, MPI or CUDA
  • Excellent ability for cooperative collaboration
  • Very good communication skills in English

Unser Angebot:

  • Possibility of pursuing a PhD at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University supervised by Prof. Benigni
  • A highly motivated research group in one of the biggest research centers in Europe
  • An excellent scientific and technical infrastructure: both necessary conditions for a successful PhD thesis at RWTH Aachen within three and a half years
  • Participation in project meetings and conferences
  • Strong support and mentoring for setting up a future career in science and/or the industry
  • Payment of the PhD position will be based on 75% of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD) EG 13
