PhD position - The role of NOx in the formation of atmospheric organic aerosol

Your Job:

Atmospheric aerosol has a prime role on shaping the Earth’s climate and deteriorating the air quality, being responsible for more than 3 million premature deaths per year worldwide. A large part of the atmospheric aerosol (roughly half worldwide) consists of organic aerosol. Organic aerosol is formed in the atmosphere from biogenic and anthropogenic sources through complicated physicochemical processes. Anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) play a pivotal role in the chemical processes of organic aerosol formation and, therefore, by controlling their emissions we can regulate organic aerosol ambient concentration. However, chemistry climate models, the main tools assisting on designing emission control strategies to mitigate climate change and improve the air quality, currently fail to accurately represent the effect of NOx on organic aerosol formation. The modelling group of IEK-8, which is a word class institution for atmospheric science, is seeking for a PhD candidate that will further improve the state of the art modelling tools of our group in order to answer crucial and timely scientific questions for the resilience of our environment. More precisely, the PhD candidate will address some of the remaining challenges in atmospheric aerosol modelling by:

  • Developing a sophisticated parameterization scheme in order to describe how the NOx levels in the atmosphere can affect the organic aerosol formation
  • Investigating how the mixture of anthropogenic and biogenic organic vapours can affect the formation of organic aerosol in the atmosphere
  • Quantifying the enhancement of organic aerosol formation from natural sources due to their interaction with anthropogenic NOx emissions

Your Profile:

  • Masters degree in physics, chemistry, environmental sciences or a related field
  • High interest in working in a transdisciplinary collaboration between experts on the process and climate scale
  • Profound programming knowledge in FORTRAN and scripting languages (e.g., Python)
  • Excellent knowledge of written and oral English
