Advertising division: IEK-5 - Photovoltaics
Reference number: 2019D-128

The Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Photovoltaic (IEK-5) focusses on researching new materials and innovative device architectures for sustainable photovoltaics based on thin films. The IEK-5 deals with the fundamental physics of partly disordered materials used in solar cells. These can be amorphous or microcrystalline silicon and its alloys, organic or hybrid (organic-inorganic) materials or various functional oxides. In addition, components and devices for new applications such as passivation and contact layers for high efficiency silicon heterojunction solar cells or multijunction solar cells for efficient water splitting are developed.

Solar cells made from Cu(In,Ga)Se2 are currently the highest efficiency thin-film solar cell technology with efficiencies exceeding 23%. In this project, we want to explore the practical and theoretical efficiency limits of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells by detailed characterization and simulation.

We are offering a

PhD Position for the Electro-Optical Simulation and Spectroscopy of Solar Cells

Your Job:

  • Method development to perform detailed loss analysis of current state of the art CIGSe solar cells
  • Realistic device simulation of current high efficiency solar cells and comparison with simulations of the radiative efficiency limit
  • Transient and steady state photoluminescence measurements on devices and films to determine the key recombination and transport properties in order to assign the losses correctly
