The Rhineland as a Model Bioeconomy District: Innovation Labs to Enable New Value Creation

Merzenich/Jülich, 21 January 2020 – Turning a lignite-based region into a pioneering bioeconomy region is the guiding principle behind an initiative involving Forschungszentrum Jülich and partners from the Rhineland. Within the scope of structural change processes, the aim is to turn this former coal-mining area into a model region for a resource-efficient and sustainable economy. Representatives from the fields of economy, science, politics, and civil society came together in Merzenich recently to launch the second subproject within the BioökonomieREVIER initiative. The goal is to establish a total of 15 innovation labs at the interface between agriculture, economy, and science in order to enable scientists to rapidly transfer new processes to economic application. This will allow new value creation and new jobs to be generated at a faster rate from scientific findings – all based on sustainable principles. The German Federal Government has allocated some € 25 million to the BioökonomieREVIER project until 2021 as part of its immediate action programme for structural change.
