Researchers Measuring Temperature of Upper Atmosphere from Space

Jülich, 18 January 2019 – A rocket was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China in December 2018. On board the rocket is a satellite for testing a new communications system for the provision of Internet services. The satellite is also equipped with the AtmoSHINE spectrometer, which was developed by atmospheric physicists and electronics engineers from Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Wuppertal and is designed to measure temperatures in the upper atmosphere. The satellite has since reached orbit and is now orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 1,100 kilometres. The test phase has shown that the spectrometer is fully functioning, even in the harsh conditions in space. The first measurement data have already been downloaded and are currently being evaluated. These data will be used to help improve climate models.
