Researchers Simulate Catastrophe

New project for optimizing large-scale evacuations launched

Jülich, 2 August 2018 – When many people need to leave a certain area abruptly, overcrowded roads and trains are preprogrammed. Possible reasons for such scenarios include an impending nuclear disaster, a chemical spill, or floods. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are now investigating how procedures can be optimized for such emergencies using the main train station in Dortmund as an example. Together with partners from Bochum University of Applied Sciences, the engineering company bueffee, and associated partners working in the field of rail operation, they will use computer simulations to obtain reliable data about large-scale evacuations, which engineers and authorities can then use for further planning. The KapaKrit project was launched on 1 August 2018 and is set to receive € 1.1 million in funding over the next three years from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
