European Supercomputing Centres Pool Resources to Procure Hardware

Jülich, 11 July 2017 – A host of European supercomputer centres are treading new paths in the procurement of hardware. Computing centres from four European countries have joined forces – for the first time at European level – to purchase new innovative supercomputing systems as part of a joint procedure. Through the Public Procurement of Innovative Solutions for High-Performance Computing (PPI4HPC) cooperation, which is being coordinated by Forschungszentrum Jülich, more supercomputing resources are in future set to be available at European level. Furthermore, the centres involved (BSC, CINECA, JSC, GENCI) are aiming to expand their influence through PPI4HPC in order to tailor hardware solutions to the requirements of scientists and engineers in Europe to an even greater extent.
