New Magnetic Effect Detects Magnetic Nano-Vortices

Jülich, 16 Oktober 2015 – Jülich scientists have discovered a magnetic transport effect, which may be suitable for manufacturing highly sensitive sensors. The effect could be used to read out data saved in tiny magnetic vortices. These skyrmions are viewed as potentially being the bits of the future because they permit a further miniaturization of data storage and can be processed extremely energy-efficiently. In view of the ever-increasing demand for energy, improving the energy efficiency of information and communication technologies is the aim of research activities around the world. The theoretical physicists’ research work has been published in the current issue of Nature Communications (DOI: 10.1038/ncomms9541).
