How Semiconductors Become Magnetic

Jülich, 14 October 2012 – Materials with both semiconducting and magnetic properties at room temperature are a long-standing ambition of physicists. They could make faster and more energy-efficient computing possible and thus revolutionize electrical and information technologies. An international team of researchers including physicists from Forschungszentrum Jülich has come one step closer to realizing this dream. Using newly developed methods, the team has answered the much debated question as to how magnetism emerges in one of the most important magnetic semiconductors at low temperatures. The findings have been published in the current issue of the high-impact journal “Nature Materials” (DOI: 10.1038/NMAT3450).
