Supervisory Board Discusses AVR Fuel Elements

At its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Forschungszentrum Jülich considered further measures in dealing with fuel elements from the AVR experimental nuclear power plant.

The storage licence for the intermediate storage facility on the campus of Forschungszentrum Jülich expires on 30 June 2013.

As one of the two partners in Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia had applied for an extension to the existing licence, which would permit the fuel elements to continue to be stored at the Jülich site until a suitable final storage facility became available. At its meeting today, the Supervisory Board rejected this proposal.

The Supervisory Board of Forschungszentrum Jülich thus stands by its resolution of 18 November 2008, according to which the AVR fuel elements must be transported to the Ahaus intermediate storage facility by 30 June 2013.
