Computer Simulations Combat Congestion

Early warning system for mass events successfully tested

Jülich, Düsseldorf, 24 September 2011 – At a football match in the Düsseldorf Esprit Arena, Jülich simulation scientists, together with several project partners, presented the results of the Hermes Project today. The computer-aided Hermes evacuation assistant can precisely determine how the crowd is distributed and predict critical congestion before it even has the chance to develop. The test system was designed for use at large-scale events and in building complexes. In case of a crisis, the assistant is designed to provide the emergency services with additional information so that they can assess the situation and implement appropriate measures.
