Electric Spin for Data Storage

The data density in working memories could be significantly increased

Jülich, 17 March – The basis for the next generation of memory devices is being created by researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle. In a ferroelectric material, they succeeded in directly observing that dipoles, which carry the information in this material, continuously change their orientation and that they can therefore organize in circular structures. The scientists have published their findings in Science. They made their discovery using a form of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy developed by the Jülich researchers, which makes strong contrasts visible. Dipoles that organize in circular structures could make it possible to store data much more densely than before in working memories, while still reading and writing this data quickly.
