Dusseldorf, 6 August 2007 - The Rector of RWTH Aachen University and the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Research Centre Jülich signed an agreement today in the NRW State Chancellery in Dusseldorf on establishing the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance (JARA). The two renowned scientific institutions hope to create a model for an internationally highly respected partnership between university and non-university research. NRW Innovation Minister Prof. Andreas Pinkwart and State Secretary at the Federal Research Ministry, Thomas Rachel, were present when the agreement was signed and expressed their approval and congratulations.

The alliance will kick off in three promising fields of research with the following sections: JARA-BRAIN (Translational Brain Medicine), JARA-FIT (Fundamentals of Future Information Technology) and JARA-SIM (Simulation Sciences). Other sections will be founded in the near future with energy research being top of the list.

NRW Innovation Minister Prof. Andreas Pinkwart welcomed the alliance with the following words: "JARA strengthens the position of North Rhine-Westphalia as a state of innovation. This pioneering cooperation will see the Aachen/Jülich region become one of the top research locations in Europe and one that will be recognised worldwide."

At the press conference in Dusseldorf, Thomas Rachel, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research said: "JARA shows that a completely new type of cooperation is possible between universities and non-university research institutions. The rest of Germany should learn from this. It does not just benefit research, but also the education of scientists."

"This alliance explicitly links international fields of research that complement each other in terms of their specialised profiles, and it therefore increases their efficiency, and it also creates outstanding shared conditions for research and education", said Prof. Dr. Achim Bachem, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Research Centre Jülich. JARA exploits the opportunities afforded by the unique Aachen/Jülich constellation: Jülich boasts scientists with an excellent grounding in basic research together with first-rate equipment, while RWTH Aachen University has engineers, among other things, who are highly qualified with superb application-oriented know-how. "This combination will see us become important players on the international stage", said Bachem.

"JARA serves as a model because we have formally signed an agreement to undertake to closely consolidate fields of science and proactively overcome institutional hurdles", clarified Prof. Dr. Burkhard Rauhut, Rector of RWTH Aachen University. Research objectives will therefore be defined and created in a joint process within the sections, the resources and equipment available to research and education will be shared, educational activities will be developed together, and personnel and investment decisions will be taken together. "Through as unbureaucratic a cooperation as possible, we hope to create a strong brand image for JARA as quickly as possible", explained Rauhut.

RWTH Aachen University and Research Centre Jülich have been closely cooperating for a number of decades. Together, both institutions have over 11,000 employees and an annual budget totalling € 908 million. JARA therefore provides the best research expertise in Europe. Thanks to its novel organisational and contractual framework, the cooperation between Aachen and Jülich has now been brought to a new level.
