Further Considerable Ozone Depletion over Arctic

Jülich, 5 March 2020 – This winter is revealing considerable levels of further ozone depletion over the Arctic – which are distinctly more pronounced than in previous years. Reasons for this include the particularly low temperatures in the stratosphere and a stable polar vortex. Calculations using the CLaMS model, which were conducted by Dr. Jens-Uwe Grooß from Jülich’s subinstitute for stratosphere research, show that the ozone content in the upper layer of the atmosphere decreased by more than 18 % in early March. These calculations are available on Jülich’s page on the Earth System Knowledge Platform (ESKP) and are updated daily.
