Peter Grünberg Institute Mourns the Loss of Prof. Harald Bolt

3 August 2021

It is with great sadness and sympathy that the Peter Grünberg Institute (PGI) learned of the sudden death of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Harald Bolt, member of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Even though PGI is not part of Scientific Division II, which Prof. Bolt headed, the institute has had common points of interest with him at various times over the years. These have included the subject of materials for the energy transition within the scope of green ICT and his desire to future-proof the central institutes, with which PGI works closely together. PGI also benefited greatly in this case from his insights into energy policy. As a well-established materials scientist, he also had a focus on the materials science research as a whole at Forschungszentrum Jülich. He had a very good scientific understanding of PGI’s capabilities, interests, and competences. One of his goals was to improve methodological integration with PGI within his division.

What was special about Harald Bolt was his understated, amiable manner that always created a pleasant atmosphere for conversations, where everyone felt at ease, appreciated, and able to discuss matters thoughtfully. We will never forget his mischievous sense of humour, which would often flash across his face in conversations like these.

In Prof. Bolt, PGI has lost a cosmopolitan, competent, and scientifically able contact and advisor with a broad range of interests as well as a highly respected person.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy to his family.
